"Today, We Write..." Something.
Prompts for the inspiration-less
Somewhere in the pursuit of getting a new full time job to fund my dreams in the most unprofessional era I’ve ever witnessed and my mind saying “Girl, just write the book and everything else will figure itself out,” I haven’t been writing.
My days have been filled with interview after interview. “How can you do everything and work for us?” “Well, we aren’t familiar with TTU, so any experience that you’ve gained isn’t valid.” Lastly, my new favorite “In order to work for us, you’ll have to stop TTU,” from probably 100 different companies whose only intention is to string me along.
So, what does the writer do when she does not write? She hides. Would focusing on writing be easier if I stayed in Mexico? Yes and it’s something I’ve been thinking about nonstop. I came back to NY to work and there is none.
Instead of hyper-fixating on the state of labor, I did what I like to do best, bring people together. So, this past Sunday I hosted my first writing salon. Now, I’ve noticed recently there’s an uptick of writer’s bars, even some in my area that I’ve been to. But they’re never filled with people I actually feel comfortable around and I’m quick to realize I’m usually the only Black person in these spaces. So naturally, I took to my local coffee shop and gathered in community to just get some words on paper again.
If you missed it, don’t live in New York, or just need a little inspiration of your own, here are some prompts to help you write again.
Note: Some may read as journal prompts, but I want to implore you to use your imagination. Write a short story, use the quotes as a piece of something much bigger. The your world, your words, and your imagination is your oyster, utilize it!
If you didn’t live in New York, where would you live?
What would your life look like if you didn’t have to rush?
If you were invisible for a day, what’s the first thing you would do?
You have 24 hours with your favorite celebrity… what do you do?
After a long day, you stare in the mirror. Your reflection winks at you. What do you do next?
“Dreaming as an act of survival”
There’s a beautiful summer ahead of you. Write about one summer goal you have and what you need to do to achieve that.
What would life be like if you lead with curiosity and not fear?
“So, I boarded a train. Kissed all goodbye….”
Are you brave enough to be exactly who you are?
“I was scared to turn the page until I realized I’m the author…”
What are you doing the first hot day of the summer?
